Who Is David Swenson: Ashtanga Pioneer, Teacher & Storyteller

Early Years and First Steps into Yoga

David Swenson began practicing yoga in 1969 with his older brother Doug in Houston, Texas. At a time when yoga resources were scarce in the United States, the brothers relied on books and experimentation in a small park.

In 1973, David was introduced to Ashtanga yoga through David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, California. Not long after, he met Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, who had been invited to teach in the U.S. This encounter marked the beginning of David’s lifelong commitment to the Ashtanga system. In 1977, he traveled to Mysore, India to study directly with Jois and learn the complete Ashtanga system.

Over more than four decades, David became one of the few Westerners to learn the entire sequence of asana and pranayama directly from Jois, eventually becoming one of the most influential ambassadors of Ashtanga yoga worldwide.

Teaching Style and Philosophy

David is known for his unique blend of deep knowledge, humor, and accessibility. His teaching combines respect for Ashtanga’s traditional roots with a friendly, down-to-earth approach that makes even the most challenging postures feel achievable.

His yoga workshops are often described as immersive and inspirational, slowing down the pace of the usual Ashtanga yoga class to explore alignment, breath, philosophy, and the subtle elements of practice. He emphasizes breath (ujjayi pranayama), energy locks (bandhas), and gaze (drishti) as the pillars of a transformative practice.

If you can’t attend one of his in-person events, David also teaches through Practice Online, where students can access guided sessions and learn directly from him no matter where they live.
