What Teaching Yoga Reveals About Being a Teachers Yoga Person

There's something that happens when someone switches from just practicing to actually teaching yoga. Like, the entire relationship changes. Suddenly it's not about what feels good in your own body anymore. It's about whether other people can understand what you're saying. Whether they can access the thing you're trying to show them.

Most people don't realize how different teaching yoga is from practicing yoga. They think it's just doing the poses in front of other people and talking about it. But teaching yoga means you have to understand the poses in a completely different way. You have to know why something works, not just that it works for you.

And that's where teachers yoga becomes its own thing. Because being good at teaching yoga doesn't necessarily mean being flexible or strong or able to do advanced poses. Teachers yoga is about something else entirely. It's about clarity. It's about being able to break down something complex into steps that actually make sense.

Teaching Yoga Is Actually Harder

Someone who's been practicing for ten years might step into teaching yoga and realize they don't actually understand their own practice as well as they thought. Teaching yoga forces that confrontation. You can't fake knowledge when you're teaching yoga. Your students will know immediately if you're just repeating something you heard once.

There's this gap between being good at practicing and being good at teaching yoga. And it's bigger than most people expect. Someone excellent at teaching yoga might not be the most advanced practitioner. But they understand the system. They can communicate it. They know how to meet people where they are.

Teachers yoga basically requires humility. Because teaching yoga will show you very quickly where your knowledge ends and your assumptions begin.

The Real Work of Teaching Yoga

David Swenson talks about this in Only Dead Fish Go With The Flow. How teaching yoga isn't about being the best at yoga. It's about understanding what yoga actually is well enough to help other people access it.

And that's kind of the thing that gets lost sometimes. Teaching yoga becomes something else when it's filtered through ego or achievement. But when it's just about clarity and helping people understand, that's when teachers yoga actually works.

Most people who start teaching yoga eventually realize they're learning more than they ever did just practicing. The practice was always there. But teaching yoga requires you to actually know it. Not just do it.

That difference matters more than it should probably.
